| The Great Depression...=[.. |
1. People during the depression had a lot of idle time and they didn't know what to do with it. 2. Flagpole and tree sitting, six day bicycle races, and marathon dancing were just a few things they did to pass the time. 3. Everybody seemed to prosper during the postwar years. 4. The economy was growing rapidly so investors were making a fortune in the stock market. 5. New technologies were also creating new jobs.
• Why were experienced trades men finding work? • Why were most skilled workers finding it difficult to stay employed for long? • How did people find food during these hard times? • Did they start to steal from the groceries?
Commodity (noun) - something useful or valued (pg#89) Eviction (noun) - to put (a tenant) out by legal process (pg#102) Jest (noun) - a ludicrous circumstance or incident (pg#104)
Because the economy was down sizing many people were forced to life off of their live savings, if they had any. |
